Barbara is one of New Zealand's best selling novelists. She has an MA(Hons) from Otago University and has worked as a university tutor, an editor and a free lance writer. She has published six adult novels and two children's books and has also had short stories and plays published and broadcast. She is also the editor of a best selling series of children's anthologies.
She was the 1999 Victoria University Writer in Residence. In 2004 she was awarded a Scholarship in Letters from Creative New Zealand and in 2005 became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to literature. In 2016 she was awarded both the Margaret Mahy Medal and the University of Otago/Creative New Zealand Children's Writing Fellowship.
Her children's novel, The Travelling Restaurant, is the NZ 2012 IBBY Honour Book for Writing
Barbara has been closely involved with a number of writers' and literary organisations. She has served on the NZ Book Council and on the National Council of the New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN). She and Chris were instrumental in setting up both the New Zealand Association of Literary Agents (NZALA) and the New Zealand Association of Manuscript Assessors (NZAMA).
